At first the cavern was too dark to see much even with the flashlights. There was a crunch underfoot that sounded like we were walking on tiny bones. Then as our eyes became more accustomed to the dim conditions we could make out some motion above. Turning our beams upward we caught a glimpse of hundreds of bats with their wings tucked in tight. The moment the beams hit they panicked, with much screeching the air above us was instantly alive with a flurry of black skin stretched over bone. They swooped, moving more like a liquid than a flock. As they left the sunlight opening was almost entirely blotted out by their frantic bodies. In minutes their screeching had dissipated into the early evening rain.

Bats swooped to and fro in the gloom from the city of the dead to the river, and flitted above it like shadows blown about by the wind.

Bats. Some would say they're evil creatures out of horror movies, their only purpose to spread rabies and make nests in your hair. Personally, I think bats are cute. They're like hamsters with wings! And they eat bugs. What's not to like? Of course, people have to believe Dracula over me. But I will convert everyone to liking bats!

As Sarah and I tiptoed through the cavern, a faint squeaking noise emerged from the depths. As we crept closer to the famous Crystal Cavern, it grew louder. And as soon as we reached the cavern itself, about a thousand bats flew out at us. Though I'd like to say I didn't, we both screamed.
