Crisp winters combined with stormy springs and disappointing summers. The land of The Daily Mail, corrupting minds and questioning authority. Orderly queues, fair play with a touch of sarcasm.

The council estate loomed large in his mind. It's graffiti embellished walls and alleys with intimidating teens threatened to be the only future possible for him. He watched the elderly shuffle around getting their pints of milk on their meagre social security and the sixteen year olds smoking as they pushed a pram. He was twelve and he swore this was not his destiny. At school he would pretend to wag off and break rules, what else could he do if he didn't want the snot beaten out of him? But at home he worked on his core subjects until he almost fell asleep on the desk and he handed his homework in by email, a private arrangement he had his Mum make with the school. His teachers gave him A's in their official record and told him he was lazy and worthless in class. This is what he had to do to escape. Look like a prat and study like a swot. It was the only way.
