He use to call them "excuses".
I called them my "exit ticket", because I always got out of things with them. I always had my way, even if it meant breaking a few rules or making "excuses." To be honest, he loved me anyway so it didn't matter if I was late. I'd just say, "my car battery died." or maybe, "My aunt called me, I think she's sick" and he'd forgive me like that. It never occurred to him that I had another waiting for me at the Grand Hotel across town, and if it did, then, "I got side-tracked darling." or "I love you baby, but that guy tricked me into that room."
Like I said before, he calls them "excuses" but they are so much more than that.

Excuses. Those things that stop you from reaching your full potential, those little devils on your shoulder. Those things that drag you down, and justify your decision not to do something. Those easy ways out, and those shortcuts. You'll regret those excuses like 'I'll do it tomorrow' NO do it now! Whatever it is do it now, because tomorrow might be too late.
