Cassandra described falling asleep as like being caught in a carousel of thoughts. Every idea, notion and event from her day would replay in her mind, demanding analysis before she could be allowed to sleep. And then finally when the carousel came to a stop and her mind was able to meander freely in the random thought that is the precursor of sleep, she would often realize that she was close to drifting off and her anxiety would start the carousel up all over again.

As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.

I feel this blackness come over me. Like a blanket, but not a blanket of warmth but a blanket of coldness making me shiver. But somehow it's making my eyes feel heavier and heavier. I finally close my eyes finally sending me into a dreamless sleep.

Dede knew all the techniques for falling asleep, she'd tried them all. But now she was convinced that doing them would only keep her awake for longer. Every half hour or so she would roll over and look at the time. Then she would roll back to see her husband sleeping like a log. It was usually somewhere in the early hours before her thoughts became disorganized enough to release her mind into sleep. Then her alarm would sound at 6am for work.

Mica would describe falling asleep as her only sweet release from the worries of the world. In her dreams she could escape, find relief. And for a few seconds when she awoke she was oblivious to her concerns. She would enjoy that brief respite of time before her troubles burst to the forefront of her mind.

Alex's chocolate brown eyes opened and closed from the light of the TV and I sort of smiled. He stared at me in comfusion, blinking, his eyelashes brushing against my cheek. "Nothing." I tried to hide my smile as best as I could. He rolls his eyes and nuzzles into my shoulder, his dark brown hair inches from my nose. I could smell his Alexlike smell, which was too good for words. After a few agonizing minutes, I felt him go limp and I smiled huge and big, cradling him to my chest.

I put my laptop back on my desk before clambering into bed. I lay there, snuggled up in my sheets waiting for myself to slowly fall asleep. I worked out that I'd now been awake for about 21 hours and that I'd probably only get 4 or 5 hours sleep before I had to do it all over again.
