The jogger, soles to road, cushioned by deep sprung heels, was so peacful upon that country track.

The jogger is a silhouette in the first light of the new day, upon the ridge-top as if she was cut from the black heavens.

The jogger feels the freshness of dewy air in welcoming lungs and upon awakening skin. For this is part of the meditation, the prayer, that sport can be.

I once jogged upon the country lanes, my dog free running close by. I can tell you that it brought a true sense of joy, a sense of oneness with nature. For in these quiet moments we can learn a truth about the self and our place in the world that talks straight to our intuition in a language we knew before we were born. Though it was so many years ago, I recall my steps, I recall how the hedges grew high and some trees reached over the track with spreading boughs. I recall that it was the first time I had a true sense of myself as an individual within a larger world, within creation. I believe that our sense of childhood wonder is a kind of being in love - that we are born already in love with nature. By being out there in the land, with no human company, I was able to get a firm grip upon that sensation and keep it for all my days. This form of love is part of my moral compass. Not all of it, for sure - but a crucial part of its functioning. Jogging - running - was thus such an important part of forming the woman I am.
