His laughter was so free and pure, so childish despite his adult years. It came to my ears as a tickle and bounce - and only a rocky heart could do anything but join in such generous mirth.

In a world without laughter, there would be no word for laughter.

Her laughter was the summer rain and the birdsong too, and every time I heard it, no matter the weather, the sun brightened. It was as if her sound lifted a veil from our eyes and allowed us to see the world more clearly. It's funny how laughter can do that, those honest rumblings of the soul.

My laughter is always a kind laughter, it is as song to a bird and comes in happy moments. It is the sound of my soul, something that comes when the smile of my eyes overflows into the air. So when you hear my giggles, my soft expressions of joy, they are as much a gift for you as me and a sign of our growing bond.

My mother was such a serious person. Even when she felt happy her face was immobile, sunken into the kind of grimness your average person would have prior to a job interview. But when something tickled her as funny she positively howled, slapping her hand up and down almost involuntarily and could barely breath for laughing. Fat tears would roll down her newly pinked cheeks and it would be several minutes before it subsided. Only then could she tell us what she had found so amusing, and we never got the joke, not even once. But in those moments of her laughter the temperature in the house rose a couple of degrees and I couldn't help but stifle a grin.

You could hear her sweet, joyful laughter from a mile away, it would echo through the halls and into each and every room in the house, and would cheer everyone up, it was at times like this that I liked having a 4 year old sister.

From the cow shed there came the most high pitched scream and we all dropped the chore we had been assigned and ran hell-for-leather in its direction. When we got there Dirk was lying on his back covered from head to toe in cow excrement, semi dangling by his left leg that was caught in the winch rope. He stopped flailing when we entered and took on such an indignant face that you'd have to have a heart of stone not to laugh. There was no pretence of sympathy and no mad rush to detangle him. Our laughter did not build softly but exploded as good as TNT, filling the dusty air and spilling out into the early morning sunshine.

She always said she hated her laugh, but every time I hear her giggling through her nose, snorting adorably, I fell a little more in love with her.
She giggled, the sound like a brook flowing merrily through a well-lit wood.
Her laugh was like a waterfall.
She sounded like she had something in her throat as she laughed. It was strained, verging on the sound of someone choking, and obviously fake.
Her laugh, loud and throaty, didn't seem to fit her.
He had a laugh like glass shattering: sharp, brief, and sudden, crashing to a halt.
He chuckled slowly and warmly, reminding me of honey.
He had a crooked little laugh to match his crooked little smile--and his crooked little mind.
His laugh was like thunder; it was a low, rumbling boom.

It was a laughter that Miller could feel in his lungs, so hard that it took his breath away. The lack of oxygen didn't matter. All the anguish of the past few days melted like snowballs in a microwave. This laughter created a small vacation, a blessed relief from all the distress that shoved its way into his brain. For a single moment, the lack of money to pay the stack of bills did not matter. He lost the tightness in his chest. The muscles in his neck relaxed. After all that had occurred, he felt hope. And hope feels good. With hope came the thought that "things would turn around," that somehow, "Someone in the great Somewhere" had stepped into this arena as his champion. He felt joy ride into his life alongside the laughter. And Miller knew, that when the laughter left, this joy would stay with him.
