Black, viscous and pungent, the crude oil coated the once pristine beach and created a suffocating blanket on top of the ocean. The tide was as black as ink. Blackened birds with their coated feathers struggled and lurched. This natural landscape that had been in harmony for time out of mind had been devastated in the minute it took the tanker to run into a ridge of rock off shore.

She loved to watch the oil slide over the hot frying pan, how quickly it lost any pretense of viscosity and ran like water. Soon it would start to smoke a little, signalling to her that it was time to add the popcorn kernels.
