The map of wrinkles on his face told of the most incredible journey. His eye lines told of laughter, of warm smiles and affection. His forehead told of worries past and worries present. But mostly they were so deeply engrained they told or a man who had travelled through eight decades to that moment; to stand here as an old man, beaten and forlorn. To be dismissed as "old" when he was so much more than the sum of his parts.

No-one wants to die young, but no-one wants to get old. We wish for perpetual youth in our gyms and beauty parlours. But old age will come with it's creaks and it's frailties, and we will all succumb to it's persistent call. We can no more avoid it than the coming of the tide, we can only meet it with grace and take the swim when it comes.

The trials of her youth had battered her into a grim submission. She had never smiled, not even as a girl. Now that her age was more advanced than her mother's had been at the time of her passing, she greeted each new day as a burden to be carried. She felt as if gravity had been turned up several fold and it weighed her shoulders down toward her knees. Her joints ached year round, regardless of the weather, but her heart kept beating just the same. Her mind was still sharp, the slow loosing of oneself to dementia was not going to be her lot. She was going to know every decay of her body to the end and recall every person she loved who had passed. Every day she sat grimly in her old brown chair, tea on one side and whisky on the other. Every night she tucked herself in to a show on the wireless, quite content for it to be her last.

Ancient, historic, antique, antiquity, out of date, redundant, went out with the arc, rusty ruins, decrepit, worn out, tattered, battered, shabby, clunker, obsolete, mature, moth-eaten clothes, so old it should be a museum piece, went out with the ark, classic, a piece he clearly thought was timeless, dated.

creaking joints, aching joints, leathery skin, wrinkles, crows feet, weathered skin, gnarled skin, hunch backed, shoulders rolled forwards, wise, learnt by experience, been through the school of hard knocks, wizened face, face like an overstored apple, face crumpled like an old paper bag, dishevelled.

Growing old. It was expected by all and yet no one is ready for it. The youngsters fear it and the elders hate that they'll have to face it soon. But most don't realise that old is mere a term, a fiction of the stereotypical mind. What is old? Old according to kids is when you can't play hide and seek to them, old according to teens is when you can't text as fast as them and old to the elders is when you they find grey hair. To society it is when you can't walk but what is it to you? You dont have the answer because you never tried to answer the question. You just accepted what the others said. But you dont have to do that. If they say you're too old to do something then do it, if they you're too old to wear something wear it! You dont have to follow their line, its not the age of the body but that of the mind that matters. Old is a term as fictional as time, so talked about but never understood. But is it growing old and dying you are scared of then know that it is just a change, and because its something new no one can ever be ready for it. But stop worrying about tomorrow when all you have to think of is today. Make today worth remembering so when you do grow old and you look back, you're happy with what you see. You can't wear a shirt for ever and likewise it is inevitable to cage your soul for ever. Change is inevitable, its like the rising tide, you can't run away from it nor can you make it stop. You have to flow with it, and when you learn to ride the waves, when you learn to float on top, you will realise that it was never that scary. So dont worry about growing old, don't worry about never waking up. Just worry that when you turn back you should like what you see. Because the day you turn back and do not like what you see and feel that you can do nothing about it is when you are truly old.
