The pool hall was the magic of my lazy afternoons. I loved the bustle, the sound of the colliding balls, the resting on the cue and dusting it with blue chalk.

Everyone knew everyone down at the pool hall. It was the place we went to feel that sense of kin, that we mattered to others and they mattered to us. When you got a nick-name that was a great day, that was your golden ticket, your "welcome to us" card, the kind that has no expiry.
