The intruder had them corralled in the corner of the bedroom, he pointed his gun at them each in turn and they closed their eyes in a huddle. Then came his chilling voice. "Eeny Meeny Miney mo..."

As he took in the form of the beast emerging from the half-light of the encroaching night, his eyes widened and his voice was not able to articulate a single sound. His brain froze, offering no course of action for his now trembling limbs to take. He felt a warm stream of liquid course down his leg and into his running shoe.

Her scream was the kind of strangled cry that belongs to those not long for this world. A scream of one in mortal terror, rooted to the spot and too afraid to run.

As the light drains away there is barely enough even for shadows. Whether I like it or not the darkness comes and under it everything in this forest is hidden. Even the stars and moon cower behind a dense layer of cloud, giving the air that tincture I associate with the world before a storm. My ears become sharper and my mind paranoid, every snap of a twig is a predator, even if it is a fawn. For each aroma my brain jumps to the most fearsome thing it could be and my body prepares for flight, fright or freeze. For the most part I just freeze, running will give my position away and I'm not much of a fighter. All I can do is wait while the blackness comes and pray that the dawn is not far behind. So I sit on the damp ground, feeling the frigid water seep into my jeans. My heart can beat all it wants, but this body won't move until daylight breaks through the canopy above. With hands resting in the soil and my back to an oak, I remain, waiting, breathing...

Her mouth opened in a silent scream and her unblinking eyes popped like an fashioned toy doll. A bead of cool sweat dripped down her back and her skin became as pale as the knife blade that flashed before her.

The emaciated man had dirt and grit all over his clothes and grimy body. His dark grey shirt (which used to be white) was tattered and shredded mainly where his heart should be. I should have taken pity on the unfortunate wretch but instead I felt an unexplained loathing at first sight. Even from the end of the street, I could see his cruel, detestable, disturbing smile in a permanent sinister snarl. Sunken, milky white eyes stared with mindless menace into mine.

Suddenly, the skeletal creature started shuffling towards me like a decrepit, decaying old man. As he got closer I could see that he had a dislocated jaw showing his torn tongue and blood-stained, razor sharp, savage teeth. Unexpectedly, a flame of anger seemed to ignite within him. He let out a piercing screech and charged towards me with ape-like fury.

There is nothing more scary than an eternity on your own, nothing and nobody to talk to. You'd ask for pain just to feel something. Countless years of that you'd be more scary than I am, no compassion, no remorse, your soul turned to the dark side without a hope of recovery. So why not join the dark side, my pretty? Why choose to be alone in your madness? Come, let us show you the pleasure of cruelty, the joy of power. You'll find it so pleasurable, we know you will. Inside you are one of us, we've seen it in you. You aren't pure enough to make it through the gates. So why live in-between the light and the dark? After all, what is there to be afraid of when you are the monster?

Scary is looking in the mirror and not liking what you see. Scary is knowing you haven't done your best to make the world a better place. Scaring is feeling like you let God down, that you didn't make the right move at the right time. Scary is failing something when you are the only hope of getting it right. Scary is the fear of your family not being safe, happy and loved. Scary is the fear of what will happen to the natural world if the madness of consumption doesn't stop. Scary is seeing how the world can be fixed but knowing you are in no position to make any changes. Scary is the knowledge that psychopaths run the world and even if we all do our best lots more people are going to die horribly. So don't talk to me about scary, don't you dare. It is the monsters' turn to be afraid, for they are the bastians of an empire about to crumble.
