The dragon's eyes were so poor that it could only detect movement. The locals had learned this the hard way but now that they knew it stealing the treasure was calculated risk, no worse than a pirate or a mercenary. Young men would practice the art of moving slowly. Progress of more than two centimetres every hour was not recommended by those who had survived the ordeal and become wealthy celebrities. The movement had to be smooth, yet so gradual that the beast was unable to distinguish the thief from a pillar of rock. And they had to do all this in the putrid smell of rotting flesh that was wafted into the cave for a week prior to the attempt. Their muscles would become stiff and threaten to cramp, their backs would ache and their stomachs would growl. But once you were in there you couldn't just loose your nerve and run out, then you were dragon food.
