Although summer’s sweet scent was the focusing lens of levity, winter’s scant wasteland scattered hope to a ghostly memory. How my eyes cried. How my face blotched. How my lungs juddered. Yet in time, through the blur of brine, a flicking fish morphed into view. It swam in swishing arcs, as if this finned friend’s heart had heard my wishing. My tears were as hammered drops of mercury, pearlescent discs of precise diameter. As slinky chainmail they were armor from nose to tail.

With my sobbing silenced by the sight, I girded resilience with all my might, and clung to metallic light. How those flexing mirrors flashed! How those micro mirrors shone! How those foil fragments found the last dregs of demurred daylight. My greyed gaze locked into its black beads, before rolling over its back. Its dorsal fin was cresting and making waves, forming a wake. Yet, even now, I know that no matter what comes, my grief washes to a gaunt paleness when compared to yours.

    Sonnet: Fish O' Tears

O’ seraphim! ‘Twas mine sobs panel-beat,

Hammer’d into a swift epitaph fish,

    Sweet aqualine arrow hued celestite,

    Tears to ice-scales, each a flat mirror-dish,

In sportive undulations it did speed,

Armour’d as chain-mail from prow to Fin’s bow,

The dark-dregs o’demured day it did bleed,

Yet mine black eyes lock’d its beads anyhow,

Fish o’tears ‘tis thine nay mine mortal end!

Rage! Yon grim gravestone mirrors canst full-flash!

Wrath! Yon micro memoir mirrors canst bend!

Temper! Yon twist-warp’d mirrors canst full-smash!

For mine Fairy God Mother, grief-tends,

Mine broken heart She love ‘n’ magick mends!

My Magical Fish Friend

- The tears cried become a magical friendly fish.

Sonnet: Fish O’ Tears

- Written in an old English style with more Shakespearean prose.
