I was in school all those long hours, yet it was only when was with the kids, babysitting, that I felt alive so fully. Those kids, they break it out of you one way or another, the real you. Then they laugh as if it's all a big joke, but they save you, the kids that is, they save you from drifting off and becoming someone who doesn't love from their soul and sing it from their eyes and in their laughing.

The problem was the rules, the kids were always so fun. They had the fun, the laughter, they sense of play we so-called-grown-ups had lacked for so long. They needed the play, the silliness and the giggles as much as oxygen. It was in their nature to bond to anyone who showed them love, not in words but in safety and steadfast nurture. It's as if they were all born to be kites and we were supposed to be their anchors as they explored the skies, safe in the knowledge that they were always held onto, always wanted, always loved, always adored.

Show me a kid with a temper and I'll show you a kid in pain. It's the same as those rescue dogs, enough ill treatment and they start acting this way. The only cure is love, patient and kind, so that's what we "babysitters" did, we sat there and loved them until their storm became a welcoming breeze.

Baby sit your heart down, sleep so soundly, because my arms are the finest cocoon. I will be here for you always, beneath the spreading boughs of our favourite tree, forever happy to see you return.
