The city lay before him like an architect's model, only the matchbox cars were moving along the slim grey lines. The wind whipped her hair about her face and she sucked in a deep breath. Her muscles were poised as if to run away but instead she brought her toes to the edge. Now she trusted her life to the silk packed to her back. As gravity took her fiercely toward the concrete below she struggled to claim any of the air that rushed by for her own lungs. Then she pulled the cord with a silent prayer. The second between release and deceleration felt like an eternity. Then the whirl of colour settled into the familiar sight of streets, buildings and trees, only now they were far bigger. She inhaled deeply savouring the realization that her sail was open. Her laughter was heard by no-one but herself, she was pumped, exhilarated. She aimed for the parking lot on top of the low-rise supermarket and prepared to land.

To base jump was to fly for a few moments, to feel so free up there in the sky, to become as awake as any human ever has.
