The only mammal to fly, black and gray, hangs upside down, uses echo location, makes clicking noise, bones of the wing like bones of a human hand, nocturnal, a phantom of the night, a shadow of the night, flying almost soundlessly into the cool night air, lives in a dark cave amongst the stalactites.

The terrain was new to the bats but not all together different from their Mexican home. Hungry, their flattened spade-shaped noses soaked up the animal smells on the night wind.

The bats of my storybooks were lean, black and leathery. They beat the night air with those wings of tight skin and fled into the night. But the bat in front of me was just cute, cute and furry. It's features reminded me of a cat, but perhaps crossed with a pig. It had two bald ears, a snout-like nose and fangs nestled within its mouth.
