climate change - quotes and descriptions to inspire creative writing
If we transferred fishing subsidies to combatting world hunger we'd be a long way down the road to stablising society and our climate.
Healthy oceans are (or are supposed to be) the biggest carbon lock up, a greater hope than evening planting trees (as important as that is).
"Fish carbon stablises our climate. The fish stirring warm water with lower cooler water cools our atmosphere. Commercial fishing is killing us. The United Nations reported on it in 2018."
The poster child of the money-nexus vs love-nexus in terms of species survival is the coal industry, especially in the developing world. To demonetize the world and run differently is the only way to stop the greedy from burning the planet to live in air conditioned palaces. Then we have a chance to collaborate on bringing the needy renewable energy resources and providing the kind of living conditions that could increase personal and societal wellness, including lower covid transmission. This is the literal smoking gun, your money or your life, c'mon Earth, make the call.
"In this pandemic," said Clara, "it is time to start talking seriously about the conservation and utilisation of plant genetic resources in relation to food security. We can't keep on letting the money-market determine the strategies of seed companies, especially in relation to their 'terminator seeds.' If we had arrived on Earth from some other planet and started devising a food security plan, it would certainly bare no resemblance to what we have now. And then we add in climate change, of new weather patterns changing the diseases our farmers face... we can act together now, or starve tomorrow. I'm voting for food security, how about you? And yes, the choice may become 'vegan or starve' in many areas of our world. However, then we'd have less contact with other species and future chances of other cross-species pandemics would thus be lowered. All the gold on earth can't feed us, but these precious plant genes can."
There comes a time when "pushing" one's ideas that could save our world becomes morally the right thing to do. And so, if you have the time, I urge you to read my book, "Nexus. A Treatise in Defence of Love as Mankind's Answer," so that we can rescue each other and our planet from the trouble of our current era. There is a link to a free version and a Kindle version from my bio (bio-link below).
For so long we've worried about climate change, and I realise it's still there. Yet in these days of pandemic the planes are on the ground, the cruise ships are docked and many cars will be off the roads. Pointless products and their pollution will stop, as will rampant consumerism. These are dark days, yet if that has been your main worry, you can let that go for a while. You can reconnect to the natural world with a greater sense of peace with mother nature. So, as you isolate, perhaps take up poetry, art, music, dance or sporting interest, take this chance to really learn about yourself and fall in love with who you are within.
As an initiative to combat climate change, poverty and increase social cohesion, increase national health and boost education - set up free (or nominal cost) vegan buffet restaurants; and start it in impoverished areas. This provides high nutritional value, lowers carbon footprint and fights poverty. To eat there is a free choice and it starts to change the national taste toward sustainable living. The restaurants can be boosted by volunteers and by community action groups. This can be linked to a local growing initiative to grow vegetables instead of grass lawns.
When we speak of climate change, perhaps let's think of Earth as a child who is a little too warm. Nearby there are doctors and they are arguing. They agree that the child is getting warmer, but not as to the cause and they focus on if her temperature increasing faster or slower. One says the hospital air conditioning is about to make the hospital cooler anyway, so there is no need to do anything. Most agree on a particular cause, yet not all. Either way, the child gets warmer. One doctor says because the child is getting hotter less quickly that she is "cooling" and the other points out that she is still getting warmer and if she gets much warmer it could be lethal. Still they argue as to the cause of the warmth. Still, the child gets warmer. The parents are alarmed, "Give us the best ways to bring her temperature down! She is hot and getting hotter!! If most of you think a certain treatment will save her we should do it now before she burns up!!"
How can we help Earth as a loved child? We can do this by halting the pollution that is harming air quality, oceans, ground water and soils. We can do this by protecting creation - protecting the forests and natural wildlife populations. The vandalism of Earth is everyone's business and we need to preserve our ecosystems. Money is manmade, creation is god-given, life is sacred.
The street is covered in the same dusty powder that is in my hair and clothes. Homes line the street like broken teeth, falling down randomly as if they were bombed. Yet the most dramatic thing to happen here in the past twenty years is the ever hotter summers and wind that howls across the landscape unhindered by trees. Graffiti still shows red and blue through the dust, tags from people who fled north with the dying rains, all childish rebellions long forgotten. How all this trauma aged us...aged me. I could be ninety in these teenage bones. I wouldn't come here if it weren't for the resources we now need, stuff that could be lying abandoned behind these sun-baked walls. I would shout to shock this place with the exuberance of life, but then I would have to breath this foul air in more deeply and I don't know how much this old hospital mask will filter.
