A few seconds into those cross country runs I wondered why I was there, every time. I simply kept running though, each step mattered. Then, before I knew it, the finish was behind me and all that was left to do was let my legs crumple and rest as they wanted to.

Cross country running was my punishment and my joy, it raised me up from a girl who felt as if she was a nobody into a somebody who mattered to the entire school. I brought them a sense of victory. I earned a level of respect. That feeling of worth saved me in ways I can never repay. Those sports coaches never knew what they gave me. They should have worn capes.

Cross country running was where I learned endurance, I needed that. I applied it to the rest of my interests, in writing and science. It taught me self control, self discipline and self determination. It was my first experience of self-mastery and the first step on the path of who I was to become.

Cross country running will teach you that when your body says the tank is empty, it is your right to demand it opens the reserve, and then, the reserve of the reserve. That's what it takes to win. Rest after. Get strong again after. Then do it all again. When you learn these things in youth, the ages to follow will use these lessons to build you all the greater. It is worth it, I promise.
