He always smiled with a fake smile of his. He always thought that life would be easier that way. To be kind to others, compliment them while in reality all he wanted to do was the opposite. But that would only make his life harder, which prevented him from doing so.

After a while, he met this girl who didn't fall for his charms, unlike the others. 'Your expression is always the same,' she bluntly said to him. Her words took him by surprise, and before he even knew it, he starting spending his time with her. It was not that hard considering that she was his classmate.

Days passed by as quick as light, he didn't know when it happened, or how it did. But his fake smile, turned real.

He puts on a fake smile to hide his pain from his friends. The reasons he does this is so he doesn't worry them, however the pains becoming to unbearable. It hurts now to even fake a smile.

Every now and then, I would wear a fake smile; Mother once told me nobody would want to be with a depressed girl. So the depression sat behind the mask and my heart prayed for a soul to notice.

Ellis stared into Cecilia's eyes, determined not to look away first. He was certain that she knew he was trying to hide something, but still he was determined to fool her. He contorted his lips into an awkward, toothy smile, his but his cheeks were not so compromising. He could feel their reluctance to be moulded falsely. When Cecilia finally averted her gazed his smile fell lifeless, allowing his face to return to its usual cold hard gawk.

You'd deny it whenever I tried to talk about it, but I saw it everytime. The lies over your lips, faking smiles and words, trying to convince everybody you were perfectly fine. Whenever you smiled, something felt wrong, like a little crook over your mouth, coming from deep inside your soul.
Oh, darling, you will never know how many times you broke my heart whenever I saw the sad look in your eyes, the corrupted fake smile you put on as a daily dress, denying yourself the right to be honest with the way you felt.
Darling, are you sure you were just trying to convince the world? Or maybe you just desperately wanted to convince yourself?
I guess we will never know. I wish I could know.

The old lady bathed in the attention of the man with the gift catalogue. There was everything for her grandchildren and at such a reasonable price! The smile never left his face, perfect soft lips over perfect white teeth. He was like her son, so kind, so polite! Even his eyes twinkled as he explained the portion that went to the children's hospital and the star that would be added to the christmas tree in her name. He called in her credit card, still smiling and read the numbers. Once the transaction cleared his face slumped faster than a poorly set dessert. He had no more interest in discussing the grandchildren or her holiday snaps, suddenly her little jokes weren't funny at all. He just sat there eating her cookies and sucking back the coffee mutely until it was all gone. She tried harder to engage him again but it was as if she had become invisible. He gathered his belongings and stood, casting a disdainful look around the impoverished room before sweeping out of the front door.

Emile smiled for eight hours a day, it was a requirement of his job. Mostly at home he would let his face fall into neutral, let his mouth lie in a thin morbid line and his cheeks rest. But once in a while he would turn it on without thinking for his wife and she would just stare at him, aghast. She didn't want to see the smile with his mouth, she wanted the smile with his eyes. She would take just a soft look of contentment over that corporate grin. She told him quite firmly, "I'd rather an honest scowl to that!"

Ted smoothed back his thinning hair and licked his cracked lips. He stopped digging in the pocket of his polyester suit when a potential customer drove into the car yard. After so many years in the business his sales demeanour was quite automatic. His smile was pasted over his face before they'd turned their engine off and he let the muscles around his eyes fall a little to recreate smile-lines. Rubbing his hands together to warm them, he strode forwards over the summer-dry lot. Sweat beaded on his face from being over-dressed for July; but first impressions were vital and nothing did it better than a suit and tie. He glanced downward briefly to make sure it was in a tight knot of yellow and brushed away a few imagined crumbs. In moments he was facing his new client, his cheeks sagged a little to notice she was accompanied by a grim looking father. It was always a trial to sell when the buyer wasn't holding the cheque book, the profit on this would be slim.

She had mastered her fake smile, right down to the wrinkles around her eyes. No one ever questioned her except one person. He saw in her eyes, the windows to her soul, and held on to her as the facade crumbled into a real grimace.

He had the world hiding behind his fake smile. It could literally be anything. Anything is possible. Was he friendly? Was he bad? We'd never know behind his fake smile he wore like a mask. The smile tore at her in her indecision. But, we'd never know behind his fake smile.

Back to Marsha. She smiles like she’s at ease, that big wide grin that makes her so beautiful and she says, “OK, Darlin,’ call me if you need anything, and I mean it. Day or night. Never too busy for you.” Now I know she’s worried, normally she talks about her life non-stop and I never tell her much about mine. I don’t mind that at all, I love it really. Her life is interesting, glamorous at times. Mine? Pretty static, but that’s what I need. We’re all different, right? I need home and “boring,” she needs sparks, fire, hot energy. But when it comes to our souls we’re aligned in ways I’m not sure either of us understand. We’re such an unlikely pair, me and her, but it works. My smile mirrors hers, to the street at large we’re two friends smiling but we both know what just happened. I’ll see her in a few weeks I guess, time usually heals these little rifts pretty well.

Fake smiles always reminded me of like when someone lies to you and you get this taste in your mouth. That taste where it makes you uncomfortable but you're too scared to call them out so you keep letting them lie. That's what a fake smile is to me.

The school photo depicted hordes of students; each plastered with a grin much too wide, one that lasted as long as the camera flash.
