At the rear hangs the fire escape, a zig-zag of metal between layers of balconies - a monument to their arrogance. Or maybe it’s just testimony to their alcohol enhanced stupidity. As I I put weight onto the first step I realize my plan won't be so easy, it squeaks worse than a rusty gate. Just weeks ago it would have been lost in the constant drone of the traffic, but now the air is as quiet as a country lane and the noise is as good as a dawn chorus.
