halloween decorations - quotes and descriptions to inspire creative writing
The children duck under thick cobwebs that are strung between naked trees. The driveway ahead is dark and lit only by the jack-o-lanterns that send out an orange flicker through their mouths and eyes. In the shaggy grass that wet's their costumes lie gravestones and severed body parts, a hand and a foot. From the doorway a witch stands shrieking and casting spells as she waves her wand up and down. The front door is open and from the inside comes horror movie music. The children poke their heads into the gloom to see a hooded figure with a scythe at the table. He does not speak or turn his head. Instead he taps the table with long finger-nails. In front of him lies a heaped bowl of the finest candy. Do they dare enter?
The front door is wrapped in orange lights that look like miniature pumpkins and at their feet lie three jack-o-lanterns aglow and flickering into the biting halloween night air. On the door is a sign, "Go back while there's still time." The door bell shrieks like a witch, the children press it over and over. Then a woman in grey with grey skin opens the door.
As they pass a dark house the rain soaked night is suddenly punctuated by an eerie green light. The air fills with shrieks and the sounds of chains and then from the open garage comes a stooped figure that drags one leg. He drags something behind him, a corpse. "Come if you dare" he says in a voice that suggests he smokes fifty a day. The children hesitate before they recognize the man who walks his chihuahua every morning and evening up and down the street.
People spend a lot of time on their halloween decorations, but I top them all. I spare no expense to gather all the materials I need to successfully creep out children and adults alike. Some of my neighbours think I'm a little bit crazy, but that's okay. They run away screaming every year!
