Home baking was a thing I picked up, such as some learn the guitar or take up some sport. At first I wasn't so good, but the more I paid attention to the details and tips, the better I got and the more fun it was. I learned to grease my pans properly and measure my ingredients right. Now that I'm actually a good baker, now that the things I make can hold their own with what professionals make, I am free to make up my own recipes and change things around. I love that. It's just as with anything I guess, you have to learn the rules before you can break them in your own artistic way.

In home baking we were relaxed when mess happened, we laughed and made jokes. Yet we also learned how to clean up and put things away as we went along. That way, when the dinner or cake was made, the kitchen was quite clean and we could enjoy the eating part all the more.

Home baking was our family tradition. We loved it. It was our way of getting together, of strengthening our bonds. Plus, that way we bought far less from the store. We bought more basic ingredients and made things from recipes. Our favourite dishes and bakes made it into the family recipe book, our most treasured heirloom. We stayed in shape though, you can be a fit cooking family. Desserts were all one portion each, no left overs, and an appropriate size for each person. That way we were responsible for one another, another way to become each other's keeper.

Home baking felt as if it was home making, all those aromas became a part of our lives as much as fresh air and sunshine.
