...Perhaps that’s it. Tomorrow he’ll be gone. She just has to find him adorable and how could she not? Now that I’m not seeing him as mine anymore he just explodes with cuteness. I smile and give him an impromptu squeeze. He hugs back and smiles shyly. Nine breads go in the pack, one is split between me and him. He munches eagerly. Perhaps he isn’t so bad after all. I flirt with the notion of being his aunt after he leaves. I could do that. Keeps tabs from afar, teach him more useful survival skills than Frankie has. I don’t really want him to be a baker under the thumb of the gangs. It can't be much of a life, but she’d do a good job, better than me...

The weight lifted from her shoulders as if an overly large child had just leapt off after a satisfying piggy back ride. She walked taller. Her stride was lighter, more carefree. She noticed how the white light of the morning streamed in through the ancient mullioned hospital window. As she made her way to the exit she broke into a run. A girlish grin spread onto her freckled cheeks as she burst into the waiting spring morning like a blackbird's melody.

His brain tingled like a hand that's been sat on for too long. A smirk was playing at the corner of his lips as he sat staring at his cell phone on the counter. Any minute now it would spring to life, vibrating it's way across the granite counter to a 1970's disco track.

She strode down the path with her eyes shining and her inner child skipping along in her mind. If she weren't already 23 she'd skip too.

...After a few more trades we head for home. Somehow now he is light again, as he munches his bread. He makes “mmm, mmmm, mmmm” noises and instead of being irritated I am surprised to find it makes me almost grin. The crumbs make a trail down my sweater on their way to the ground and somehow this is OK with me. I chalk it up to knowing he’ll be going soon. Frankie is going to fall in love with him tomorrow and life goes back to normal...

...Cause I’m hopeful, yes I am, hopeful for today,
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away,
And be hopeful (hopeful) and he’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy but that’s okay.
cause we hopeful....
