Imposing cliffs of white as tall as any made from rock sheared vertically from the briny waves. The walls were creviced, patterned with geometric shadows and the kind of white that could make a blank page look greyed. It was without a doubt the most pristine and perfect thing we had ever seen, it seemed incredible that something so large could simply float in the sea, no more anchored than a twig. It was of course moving in the currents but at such a graceful pace as to appear quite static. It was like an undiscovered land, a kingdom of ice, but we knew better than to approach it. An iceberg is not a seafarers friend and we soon altered our course to avoid it.

Ahead were only grey seas melting into grey skies. The wind scurried around them stealing away their warmth, giving it to an environment that neither knew nor cared. It would be a day before they spied the rocky coastline and soon even this monochromatic scene would be veiled behind the curtain of night. Even the moon deserted them, it would cast no soft light to ease the inkiness. In an instant a mountain of white, pure and brilliant, emerged from the darkness. It caught and reflected the dying rays of the sun, breathtaking in its splendour and horrifying in its proximity. It was an iceberg big enough to sink an ocean liner let alone a small cargo vessel. There would be even more compact ice below than on top, the impact would have the same effect as ramming a cliff at full tilt. The skipper pulled the wheel around, full rudder left and speed killed. With noting left to do but pray we threw our fates up to the Lord.

By the time the Iceberg drifts past Cape York the ice-pack is looser and studded with bergs of every size and description. The biggest are still the ones from the fiords behind Jakobshavn but there are also many smaller bergs that have crumbled off the ice cliffs in Melville Bay. There are humped and crested bergs, like the backs of dinosaurs; round and ridged ones, like giant scallop shells; tall, turreted squares like castles; tilted blocks which rise to sheer cliffs, like the bows of ocean liners. There are tent-shaped, conch-shaped, gable-shaped, and fluted bergs. This glittering mass is pushed by the current, stinger now, westward through the thinning pack.

The iceberg seemed small above the water. But a captain in these parts knows that most of it is below the water and the danger extends far beyond what can be seen above.

The iceberg lay like a polar bear in the water, with only it's head poking out and it's massive body beneath the salty frigid waves.

Alex stood on the prow with his notebook in his hand, determined to write a diary entry. He described the iceberg as it "glittered like a diamond born in the ocean as the crystalline surface scattered the mid-afternoon light".
