On reflection she thought that the infertility was part of her destiny. Her family was made up of kids she'd adopted from all kinds of backgrounds. She became their mother. What does genetics have to do with it? It's all just DNA, strings of nucleotides, what has that got to do with the power of a mother's love?

The cancer didn't just take away her youthful exuberance, it killed her future children. Perhaps if she'd been a career woman, like her doctor, she wouldn't mind so much. But being a mother was all she'd ever wanted. She had played dolls as a girl, now that would be the closest she'd ever come to holding her own newborn. If she met a boy she wouldn't be able to make him a father. Maybe then he'd leave, maybe she was destined to be alone; no husband no kids.
