"Hey, I'd like to introduce someone to you, Clarke, the duke's son - so devilishly handsome with a heart of gold. Apparently he doesn't even like the hunt. Can you imagine, the son of a duke shedding tears for a fox? Well, you should see how that makes all the girl's swoon! Rich around here is two-a-penny, but a man who loves like that? Rarer than a pity party for Richard Nixon, what?"

There's someone I'd like to introduce you to. Not that she wants to talk to you. For the most part she finds you scarier than Nightmare on Elms Street, and she finds that so scary she won't even watch it. She's a freak by your standards and an angel by mine. She'll read you like a book and you'll hate it. Though she isn't judging you she'll trigger your inner conscience, prickle it. You'll decide you don't like her or just make an excuse to avoid her in future, she is "weird" after all. But in this crazy ass world can you show me one person you think is "normal"? Normality is relative like hot and cold, high and low. She isn't though, she's love wrapped up too thinly to stop it from spilling out of edges. If you can find a way to let her in she'll light you up just like she does me. Like all "lights" she's a little blinding at first, by all means squint but don't turn your back, this is your chance to meet someone special.

...it’s time to meet Dakota. But her background is confusing and it’s only coming to me in dribs and drabs, so we’ll just have to make the best choices we can on the given information. That’s life though, right? Often we don’t have complete information, in fact isn’t that the usual state of affairs? Dakota isn’t in the house at all, well, technically neither are you, but we’ll let that slide. Dakota is out there in the rain, I’ll show you.

Look out of the window, past the drops and the water that courses down like mini-rivers onto the decking. My street has gone of course, disappeared, but don’t worry about that now. There are no more mown lawns and unruly maple trees, but still the downpour is almost louder than my voice. Focus on my dulcet tones, my southern British voice. With my words I will paint Dakota for you, she’s more real that you will ever fully comprehend. When I last saw Dakota she was a child, but that was twenty years ago. I can tell you what she was like then and wait for more information to come on her present situation, all I know is that she’s in dire straights now and you will have to decide if she gets help or not. That may seem easy, of course you’ll help, but things have a nasty habit of getting complicated...

Dakota was a sweet and gentle child when I knew her, though it may sound like a cliche, it’s true. Her hair was lighter back then, chestnut I suppose and she would braid it for hour in front of the mirror, But Dakota was already disturbed by the age of six. Though the toilet was only a few metres from her bedroom she would crawl under an old pool table and urinate on the carpet. No-one knows why she did it. It was as if some animal instinct drove her to do it, to hide somewhere dark, somewhere that felt safe. She played with her dolls and was kind to her siblings. She was a fighter, never staying down if she fell or got knocked. She would go out of her way to be nice to other kids at school, but mostly stuck to just two friends who didn’t mind how old her clothes were. Did I say she has freckles? She does. She was a skinny kid but mostly healthy. She loved animals, as most little girls do. She hated jelly and sausages. She was a teacher pleaser, always doing her best in classes and clever too, learning quickly. But her childhood was rough from the start, some kids have it worse, but her home was turmoil and violence; not constantly, but enough to make her less stable than she should have been. I wish I could have saved her from the years ahead of her, but I was only a teen myself back then.

Perhaps we should move on to visiting Nathan while I’ve still got half a brain functioning, I must have lost fifty percent of my neurones to anger. Anyhow, let me tell you about him first. He grew up in a middle classed home in California, attended the local schools but almost dropped out at sixteen - not because he isn’t smart, rather because he was smarter than his teachers and found the whole thing duller than the dishes currently dirtying my kitchen (no joke, alas). He’s a genius and nicer than sunshine after winter. Anyway, he dazzled an ivy league university with a computer programme he wrote and aced his math so they took him anyway. If a challenge ignites his passion he’ll work on it so much he doesn’t sleep. What does he look like? He’s got the most amazing black skin and brown eyes, he’s like another son to me really. He's tall, athletic build and has a shyness about him that's so cute I want to wrap him in a soft duvet to protect him from the world. I can't though, he has his own way to make in life. All I can do is be here when he calls for me. I'm going to tell you three possible futures for Nathan, you can pick the one you think should happen. Then I'll tell you what you need to do to twist the odds in favour of that option...

Now, there's someone I'd love to introduce you to. He come's on a little strong, pretty unorthodox opinions. He's a rebel at heart, not one to ever play by the rules. But he's the most loving man you'll ever meet. Not that he shows it much, like most men he shows his love through self sacrifice and working hard. He's got so many good ideas though, I just know you're going to love him as much as I do.

I'd like to introduce you to someone I met on a train. You'd never believe how we met, we'd been sold the same ticket, both of us 5B! Well, I wasn't going to sit on his lap and he wasn't going to sit on mine. We ended up taking turns in the seat, but like any good gent I'm pretty sure he gave me a bit more than my fair share. At first he didn't talk much, one of those thinker types that doesn't let much out, but by the time we got to Brighton we were chatting like old chums. His name's Derek...

Right, I'm going to introduce you to Ryan next. He's going to stand too close and his breath stinks, but keep smiling and don't back off. He's got a lot of clout around here and reminding him of his halitosis is something you just don't want to do, not if you want a career here. There's good money in it for you if you can, very good.
