The jelly quivered on the plate, a gelatinous mass that wiggled and jiggled at the slightest touch. It was Mom's way of making her kids behave- they would have to wait for the jello to stop jiggling to eat it, and any noise or movement could set it off again.

My pa made blackberry jelly. It was the better than anything in the store. We'd spread it thickly on our toast in the fall and then thinner, more sparingly in the spring. By late May it was gone and there would be three whole months of the cheap strawberry stuff.
