The laptops lay on the old wooden benches, like slices of technology from some far flung extraterrestrial world meeting the hand hewn woodwork of the late nineteenth century. Like opposite worlds colliding. They were sleek and shiny, thinner than an average school textbook but containing the knowledge of a whole world, all at the click of a mouse and the touch of a button.

In the research room, rows of gleaming laptops sat on the polished oak tables. The screens illuminate their smiling faces. Golden sunlight was streaming through the opened windows. The fresh air of April rushed in to meet the students.

What had been so shiny and top-of-the-line only a year ago was now hardly worth its weight in bricks. All the new games made it run slower than an old glass window - arcane before its first birthday - wasn't that always the way? The new computers were never thinner or smaller anymore, lighter perhaps, easier to break certainly... But what choice was there? Everyone played the game... everyone. And if you didn't how could you possibly win a place in The Hall of Fame? There wasn't a soul alive who didn't want that! Nope. The only question was whether he could scrape the credits to upgrade legally or not, there were always other options...
