Lightning came, a brilliant shock of white in the graphite sky, forking silently to the unsuspecting ground - the thunderous boom always calling its warning too late.

Lightning came like a rip in the inky night, as if behind the dark canvass was a brilliant light just waiting to flood through any crack no matter how small.

Lightning cut crazy zig-zags into the black sky, each of them painting a previously unseen path whiter than the snow at our feet.

Just when her Fiona's eyes had adjusted to the darkening countryside, the steel grey clouds melting into the newly monochromatic landscape, there came a brilliant flash that flickered and died. It was not a bolt, streaking to earth, but more like an almighty camera flash that blanketed everything at once. Moments later there came the rumbling thunder and right on cue the rain began to fall haphazardly from the sky, as if it wasn't entirely committed to the idea of raining. Then all at once it fell in great sheets and there was nowhere to hide. Another flash burned into her dilated pupils followed hotly by it's cracking boom. She was too far from home to run all the way, but nonetheless she broke into a trot, her rubber boots squelching with each footfall and her clothing wet through before she'd even climbed the style.

“I roamed the countryside searching for answers to things I did not understand. Why thunder lasts longer than that which causes it, and why immediately on its creation the lightning becomes visible to the eye while thunder requires time to travel. How”

Streaks of pure white crackled against a stormy blanket of grey, shrouding hot silver clouds with its blinding incandescence, emanating the might of an imminent tempest. Jagged bolts endlessly protrude, filling the sky with undying flashes of radiance.

Storms reminded me of fire. The dark grey clouds were like ash and soot while lighting was the memory of a fire that once burned bright.

A bolt of white hot lightning broke the utter blackness, cleaving the night in parts, but just for the briefest of moments. And in that violent illumination they saw what their enemy did not want them to. These machines that could knock out all their electronics, or even recode them to turn on their masters, could not control a storm. In that brilliant electric flickering of God given light the positions of the advancing drones were laid bare. A year ago Amber would have forgotten them, panicked, fled. But now she was a leader. She burned their formation to memory and ordered her resistance fighters into position.

No lightning flashed in the blue sky and no thunder pealed.

The lightning flashed and pushed its inverted limbs down to the wheat field. In one, two, three seconds, the loud boom of the thunder struck. The sky had been dark even at two in the afternoon, but I had to make it to the hospital, there was no turning back. As I drove the long distance to town, the intensity and the frequency increased. The lightning struck. One, two, and the boom came. Nearer. A few more miles, the lightning forked dreadfully close to the car, and One, and then boom. I stopped the car on the road between two huge wheat fields, and ran to dive into a ditch. At that moment, the lightning hit the car, and evidently the gas tank. It exploded and tumbled upside down into the middle of the road. I lay there motionless and alive until the lightning and thunder left me alone...

The lightning was a creature, desprate to escape the vicious bonds of the dark grey storm clouds.
