We'd come to think of the pickup trucks in the same way we saw everything else in the landscape, as if they belonged as much as the trees and horses. Perhaps in a few generations they'll be seen the same way we look at caveman tools now, but the trees and horses will remain, and with good leadership and wisdom, so will we.

The pickup truck was once one of those pollution belching monsters, but ol' Hal fitted it out with one of those electric converter kits. Now it's more environmentally friendly than anything new 'cause the chassis is already made. So it's an old-new antique and it runs real sweet.

The pickup truck had lead a heroes life, if one can think of a machine that way. It hauled the water and supplies to the remote villages for years until we got the pipes laid and the fish and vegetable farms built. Ken ran his hands over the dented and rusted bodywork, it was time to send it to the reconditioning yard.

"In the city big-wheel pickup trucks like this are as good as wearing a dunce hat in public, but out here they save lives. The mud can get real deep and we need the traction all wheel drive gives. One day we'll be sending out the hospital supplies by drones, no doubt but for now this is what we've got."
