General

As the army came over the wooded clumps Sarafina watched. Either her father would be at the head of the line or else he was dead. She could make out that the first horse was a grey, that was good. The rider was tall and muscular, but so were so many other soldiers. After ten more painful minutes they were close enough to make out some facial features. Tears ran unchecked down her face and wetted the tinder dry soil at her feet. Too overcome to run to him or even call out she sat in the tall grass hugging her rag doll. Soon there were many villagers pouring out of their homes to greet their men. Then after a few minutes to compose herself the general's daughter was pushing her way through a thicket of legs.

The tension that had kept him up for 36 hours straight melted into nothing. The shuttle was on the tarmac, the crew were safe. With the adrenaline he had been firing instructions for all that time, problem solving and delegating. He sat on the couch at home now wearing nothing but PJ pants and a school boy smile. He reran the video clip of the wheels kissing the tarmac on his phone and rumpled his hair. Then like a drunk he stumbled to bed, his body was unwinding now and his brain shutting down. The emergency had passed.
