As Kayla scanned the crowd in the science museum she suddenly realised she could see no sign of him. She started to move amongst the families, her eyes darting more wildly with each passing second, noticing any toddler with a glint of red, hoping it was his red t-shirt. Then she began to call his name, getting ever louder, until many heads were turned in her direction. She had their attention. She might as well use it. "Has anyone seen a toddler boy in a red shirt?" she yelled, her voice almost cracking, "He's about this high,"she said, gesturing with her hand. The sea of blank faces stared back at her. A staff member appeared at her side and after a brief description he spoke into his radio. The museum was put under lock-down. Now the staff was searching too.
He ran through the list of places it could be in his mind, checking off the ones he had already searched. As he gazed around the apartment. It now had the look of a place that had been burgled. Then it occurred to him that you often find things as you tidy up, and he set about the task with a sort of meticulousness that was quite uncharacteristic of him. As he sifted and sorted his eyes were constantly on the look-out for any gleam of silver that might be part of the picture frame he was looking for.
