I remember this cow when she was a baby, a calf with eyes that were so large and expressive. She once laid her head on my lap in the barn and we passed an afternoon that way, me telling her stories, her enjoying my voice. She's huge now. Still pretty to me. I love to watch her graze the meadow, now with a calf of her own. She is my buttercup with soft golden fur under the dappled sky.

Now for Lila. Lila is very loving, she adores flowers and sunshine. She’s very cuddly and quite gentle. I love to visit her because I find such beauty in simplicity. She has a best friend who she loves to be with, she gets quite stressed when they are separated. How cute! Not along ago her community voted her to be the leader based on her intelligence, inquisitiveness, confidence and experience. Not only that, she learnt a while ago how to unbolt her own pen in the barn so she could go out to the pasture anytime she wanted to. When she learns something new she gets super excited, sometimes she actually jumps up in the air. In a world that has become lost by confusing “intelligence” with “complexity,” she’s a breath of fresh air. She has a special bond with her mother, who nursed her for almost a full year. She isn’t caged because no-one is mean enough to scare her, I guess that’s why she’s so invigorating to be around. It’s like meeting happiness and love in a bundle - a bit like Kitty, I’m sure your remember her. Btw, she’s doing very well.

The cow is akin to some sort of magical being. I gaze into her eyes and feel a sort of peace, a gentleness. Under that fur and frame, within that body with its beating heart, is a brain and nervous system much as my own. And in that moment of connection, of feeling our brains come to some sense of togetherness.
