It was a birthmark that showed he was special, for why else make his face so different? In that there was eternal beauty, a promise of what he could become.

My birthmark was a patch of sweet brown skin in the shape of a heart, as if it longed to regain the hue that our ancestors were. The rest of me is white, which I am told helps me to absorb more vitamin D, it's the biological trade off that determines how brown or pale different peoples became - did they need sun protection or Vitamin D more? Well, I guess that little heart-shaped island is well protected in the summer time.

A birthmark was good luck in our parts, good luck to the bearer and those they loved.

A birthmark was a good omen, a form of divine good wish that kissed the skin.
