The girl has almost translucent skin, thin and without any discernible pigment. I guess back in the day she'd have rouged up for some colour, but in these days of scarcity it doesn't pay to look rich unless you have muscle for protection. As she approaches I send my gaze elsewhere to be polite, but as she heads away I return to her slight frame, gait almost graceful but something's not quite right in her body motion, off balance, awkward. That's when I spy them, purple welts on the rear of her leg almost hidden by the hem of her over-washed cotton frock.

Even through the grime it isn't hard to tell that the kid's skin has more abrasions than a knocked about stray mutt. On my side of the bridge it would be a honeyed brown and softened with that "puppy fat" that makes small children so adorable. Instead I can see it stretching over cheekbones like a thin tarp over a rail. He stands there like his physical state is nothing, like he's in charge - but then he has to. This isn't a place where those who stay down are coddled. His only chance is to stay alive until he's big enough to be on the other end of the beating.

Janis rubbed a thick finger across the skin of his forearm and grimaced. There was no soft padding underneath, the surface was less elastic than charity store swimwear and he could see dry flakes breaking away into the sharp light of morning to join the dust laden air. His veins were raised like a poorly laid irrigation system of decrepit blue piping and the once coarse dark hair was already white. Age and malnutrition, not a good combination...

Before the woman steps from the dusky shade of the forest canopy, I know she's from these parts. Her clothing is like mine, western, expensive - but her skin is of this region as are her facial features. Her skin is the hue of dark roast coffee beans, smoothly falling over a bone symmetry money can't buy. Her black hair is pulled back to a low pony tail to accommodate her ranger hat and at her side is a weapon so large I'm surprised it doesn't pull her off balance...

Theo's skin was greyed in a way that made it look thicker, more leathery, as if all the blood had leached into his core or else drained into those oversized feet. It hung on his skull like pastry draped over cut apple. Every movement he made was more crisp than usual, robotic even. We all knew Elsa was near the end, but we didn't know she'd take the best part of Theo with her...

Veins ran like connected rivers across her pale skin. She was fair, almost like a porcelain doll, yet she did hold some color. When she got terribly cold her exposed skin took on the appearance of a subway map.

In the twilight your skin is honeyed. I let my eye roam over your chest, to the muscle tone in your arms. As my gaze rises to take in the face that soothes me, I see your eyes, their hue matching the newly fallen chestnuts in the park. My hands fall into yours. I love the way you smile, so gentle, understated. Then in an instant we are close and I feel our body heat combine like our emotions - as if they are painted into the air about us.

How is it that my love for you travelled from my heart into my blood? That it flows through the skin that touches yours. It is that I love your mind, your soul, that makes this body connection explosive beyond reason. It's there in everything we do, everything we say, even in our silences.
