The boxing ring was where we transformed years of pain into moments of immense suffering, as if we were beating that torment from one another's bones.

That boxing ring is cruel, the foes hit to hurt. As strong as you are, I have to make choices about what you can take, when and how often. I do that because you are like Scrappy Doo, always tapping in no matter the size of the foe. So I will let you "at it," but you gotta trust me when it comes to choosing time and place. I'm good at that, you'll be okay with me.

I can't learn how to take a hit if you won't let me in the ring.

Save me from real harm, but I need to feel some real punches in the boxing ring. I have to learn how to dodge them, how to counter punch and how to get back up if they land one. How else can I become a champion, how else can I win? Rocky didn't raise that belt by sitting on the sidelines and neither can I.

You said I can fight now. You said I'd earned the right to be considered that. So let me in that boxing ring. Let me take some punches and learn how to heal from them. I'll figure it out. That's what real champions do, right?
