The insular cortex registers disgust, both the emotional and the rotten fish sort. And so in writing and movies we often use one the exaggerate the other. Yet we must take caution not to short-circuit the brain, to link disgust to things that are wholesome and good for us as some in the horror genre do. How we use our creative arts to program and reprogram the brain matters very much to wider society - writing has been how humans have kept societies safe since before the invention of law and order. Done right, it provides a measure of long lasting stability to populations.

Disgust is important to our intuitions because it brings a strongly primitive reaction, yet it is a sense so easily evoked for purposes of deliberate manipulation.
