In the green glow of the night-vision goggles, her features leaped out at Artemis like a Halloween mask. The fairy's nose was long and hooked under two slitted golden eyes. Her ears were pointed and her alcohol addiction had melted her skin like putty.

Tiny filamentous wings, transparent wings, wings like a butterfly, translucent wings, shimmering wings, nut brown skin, glossy golden hair, hair as brown as the tree trunks, hair as black as the velvety night sky, dress of flower petals, dressed in lycra jumpsuit with armour plating in places, knee high boots, six inches high, elfin features, face as freckled as stars in the night sky, nimble, agile, thin but muscular limbs, crash helmet, motorized wings, stun gun in holster, memory wiping lazer from electronic wrist band, long thin fingers, elegant neck, determined look on it's face, short wooden wand.

The fairy was unlike any stereotype I'd ever seen. She was larger for a start, maybe ten inches tall, with sinewy muscle and nut-brown skin. On her head she wore a red cloth tied to make a hat and on her feet were leather boots. Her garment was garish but I liked it, vibrant colors have always appealed to me. I expected her to try to blend into her background in some way, to camouflage. But then she raised her wings and vanished into a hazy blur.

Dancing through the night this glorious person glides through the air. Long brown hair glides behind this tall, young, slim lady. Her long purple skirt flowing proud past her elegant feet.

The spirit of earth hovered around Murphy above him, from above Tanya could taste the scent of flowers, stunned she and Kit looked at each other confused, that they could taste as well as smell this from her. They could sense moss and the breath of trees, bark and bugs. The spirit had her naked arm wrapped in what looked like the roots of a tree curling around her like a playful snake. Her hair was wild and as brown as earth, with small horns either side of her head that reminded kit of a juvenile deer horns. Her eyes were green a beautiful green

The fairy bit her lip ever so slightly and took the smallest of steps back toward the oak. In that dappled shade her hair was the colour of the acorn caps, yet her eyes were bright like the acorns themselves. Her skin was just as dappled, pale yet covered with so many freckles that she was quite brown. Her frame was slight in an athletic way, not weak, just lean and muscular. She just stood there in her clothes of cedar bark waiting for the boy to make the first move, knowing full well that escape was simple should the need arise.

The fairies of that glen had a way of looking right into your soul, as if it were a book open for the reading. Then in their way they would ease you with ordinary words that had an effect greater than any drug or magic. Though their population was small no-one ever saw the same fairy twice, their appearance changing depending on what the human needed to see to be at ease. They could look like any race or gender, any size. So asking what they really look like is futile, some say even the fairies themselves don't know... that their magic has been disguising them for so long that they have long stopped caring and just choose a form.

Fairy Tales

The creatures of the magical realm had no wings and neither were they small. Thousands of years ago they were either called “faeries,” “witches” or “angels” and each carried their dangers. It was better by far to go unnoticed, keeping their “magic” under-wraps. The strategy by and large was a success, yet from time to time there came a young one who couldn't control their gifts. The exposure of one could unravel the entire community... yet in the age of cynicism there were more options. In that era if anyone reported seeing magic they would be locked up as crazy. Flora was one such young faery, skin of ebony and eyes of amber, bursting with more magic than her entire family put together. It was decided never to tell her who or what she was, to send her out among the humans. She would either save herself and the magical beings or die, but the alternative was far worse.
