secret base - quotes and descriptions to inspire creative writing
It was a huge chamber, the walls - half naked rock, half polished steel - lined with computer equipment, electronic meters, machines that blinked and flickered with a life of their own. It was staffed by forty or fifty people, some in white coats, others in overalls, all wearing armbands of different colors: red, yellow, blue, and green. Arc lights beamed down from above. Armed guards stood at each doorway, watching the work with blank faces.

From the outside the secret base appeared to be an abandoned storage barn. Rusty barrels of noxious chemicals were littered around the entrance, each labelled with a skull and crossbones. Tall weeds grew between the stones and the fence was almost falling over, hardly high security. Nobody cared about what was above ground, all that was just owned by The Mandrakes so that nobody else could develop the land that was over them. Underground it was a different story. There was a maze of titanium rooms, each either buzzing with computers or loaded with the latest in weaponry. Every inch was recorded by security cameras and the staff wore electronic chips under their skin. Anyone without a chip got fried by the wall mounted lasers. They came and went through the tunnel that lead into the back of a downtown take-away, also owned by them. They would pick up meals as they passed through.
When Kipper leads me into the "inner sanctum" I almost laugh and clap him on the back, but there's no hint of repressed humour. Instead there is a nervousness that doesn't become him, doesn't belong to him. He gestures at the bank of monitors and wall of chaotically linked motherboards - the computer. Twenty years ago this much hardware would fit into my back pocket, now this is all that can be scrapped by the only ones smart enough to rebel on the quiet instead of with that fatal guttural pride in the streets. My heart sinks. They don't need an engineer to save them, they need a miracle worker, and last time I checked that wasn't on my résumé.
