tourists - quotes and descriptions to inspire creative writing
The tourists boarded the tour bus, chattering with excitement, some in English and some in foreign languages I did not understand. Some tourists considered themselves extremely knowledgeable experts, and took it upon themselves to educate everyone about the country they were visiting. Some were sitting quietly, peeking out the window and pointing at people. A few had buried themselves in their guides, memorizing how to ask where the porta-potty was and reading up on all the famous monuments. After a few minutes of analyzing the composition of people in this particular bus, I turned the key in the ignition. I began my speech on safety. "Please don't stand up on the bus..."
A brilliant flash of white, followed by a harsh click of a camera, blinded my eyes and shook me out of my trance. I scowled and turned away from the infuriating tourist, while muttering obscenities under my breath.
Most were sightseers from all corners of the world; after all, Varenna was a renowned tourist attraction, and was often visited at this time of the year. There were the Westerners: their blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin and distinct accents distinguishing them from the crowd. There were various clusters of Asians; each group trailing their specific flag as their tour guide babbled excitedly about the sights in some incomprehensible language. A few of them shoved their way past with no regard whatsoever, oblivious to the grumbling on their insensitiveness.
The rock around the crater is ruched like a ball gown, but harder and more rough than the concrete on the road that leads to the base. The tourists come from far and wide, grins wide and wallets wider. So we take them up through the forest, scale the loose rocky screes to the crater and wait while they take selfies and group pictures. Then we sell them merchandise, meals and exclusive samples from the crater. Then they go, only to be replaced, adrenaline junkies after a fix. I'm not judging though, I love'em. Maybe if I was rich and bored I'd do it too. Hard to say.
