Virtue signalling stems from virtue ethics, the study of what is virtuous. Virtue is what is good, loving and kind. Virtue stems from starting with love as the supreme first principle and moving forwards from this point. Virtue ethics is connected to neuroscience by the study of how ethical choices use both the empathy and logical areas of the prefrontal cortex. Thus virtue is closely related to brain health, physical health and the healthy functioning of society. Those who use virtue signalling are helping their audience to tune into this concept.

Politicians may, for example, use virtue signalling to show the immorality of failing to feed people on a planet with plenty of food. To feed the people is an act that stems from love, the opposite is an act of emotional indifference. Love signals "the good" and emotional difference signals "the bad or evil."
