I paid for my writer's quill in pain, as if these words were written in blood from the tips of angel wings pulled out by force. Greatness and struggle always are bound, for it is only in this personal battle to overcome that we can be great. To win the olympics there is the pain and pleasure of training hard. To become a great moral philosopher there is the pain and pleasure of remaining emotionally vulnerable and hooking those emotions up to the logical brain for analysis. For the storyteller who keeps society on track there is the experiencing of suffering so that it can fuel the creation of story-art that keeps others safer from such pain. And to shirk away from these innate talents, these gifts of heaven, would bring its own pain. We do not choose any life without pain, we all pay one way or another, the only question is how we pay and for what? Then there is us as a society and a globe, what do the sum of our actions pay for? Look at the natural environment, look at the climate.... who is it that will pay for this and how? Heaven, I can tell you, is all about personal responsibility, hell is all about party now and let someone else pick up the tab... When we are in trouble do we say, "What the hell?" or "Heaven give us strength"? Who are we really praying to? Ah well, what the heck, go to hell, see if I care, you've all got the receipts in your pockets anyway.

You pay for everything one way or another. If you are lazy you will pay with the pain of failure. If you love to eat and indulge you will pay with the price of your health and self esteem. Yet if you love ballet, if you wish to fly as if God had remembered to sew on your angel wings, you will pay in the pain of training, in daily dedication, sweat and struggle. In this life, what are you paying for and how? The cost-benefit see-saw is always there.

Surround yourself with those who believe in paying for their success by their own sweat and hold themselves personally accountable to themselves and perhaps to a higher power. Otherwise, around those who push blame elsewhere, it is those around them who pay part of the price for their embraced victimhood. And yes, you should stand by family and friends, you should be loyal and kind, you should be dependable and have real virtue... yet if they are determined to sink themselves and everyone around them... leave... then maybe they'll learn to swim and do better. Maybe they'll hate you for leaving, that's their right... but leave anyway... at least then you and they have a chance for a better future. Pay for your own good fortune through your own loving kindness and determined hard work. How you live and love matters.
