"It's hard to imagine that there is truly a middle class when almost none can afford to stay at home to raise their own children; yet rather I think there are different levels of comfort for working class people - everyone other than the rich. Yet for those who are the 'comfort plus' level of working class, those in nice homes with good food, still feeling insecure because of the financial system, their virtue is that in large numbers they still act to protect the poorer workers, those who struggle and often fall, at their own expense in terms of time and money. It is a phenomenon seen for about two hundred years that the less well off are far more charitable than the rich. For one, they know the pain of poverty and hunger; secondly they have no pretence of ongoing security and live in the reality that living is by the moment, guaranteed to none."
